Creating a Pick List for an existing field

I'd like to create a pick list for a field related to Assets.  I'd like to use the existing field "Asset Code" which appears in the "Insert New Asset" wizard.  Actually it was easy to create the list following the directions in the SLX Certified Student Course Curriculum guide I have - it just neglects to comment on how to connect that picklist to the field.  I have already created a new picklist, that I've called "Account AssetCode."  How do I associate this picklist with the field "AssetCode" (Account.AccountProduct.AssetCode)?

    Kim,

I did not go and look at the field object. But....as long as the field object was created as a picklist. There is a property called "picklistname" on that field.

Open the form, hightlight the field, right click and choose properties. Go to the "PickListName" property.

You can just browse and find the new picklist that you created.

     I hope this helps.

    Hi Dale, Kim

It's unlikely that would be a picklist object if it's not already a picklist. However, the resolution is fairly simple:

    1) make a note of what the field is already data bound to (check the text property) - it will link to the data item
    2) From the Architect palette (F12) - drop a new picklist object onto the form
    3) From the new object's PicklistName - select your new picklist created earlier
    4) Select the Text property - hit the ellipse - select the data item remembered from step 1

    Save | Release (F10)

Whisk, stir, bake on gas mark 5 and leave to set for 20 mins mmmm :-)

    Regards
    Mike

Thanks - I'm not actually our Administrator, but I have rights to create, modify and delete picklists and a few other Administrator-level things.  I thought if I could create a new picklist, I could actually do everything myself, but I'm unable to access any of the tools you mentioned so I guess not.  I'll have to hand it off to our real Administrator.

Ah right, yes - it's unfortunate you can create p/lists but then not be able to use them. I think it's because you can add/edit entries and automatically get ability to create new ones. But, as mentioned, not much use I'm afraid unless you have Architect to open/edit the forms.
